Build real skills for wildlife management and tourism careers

If you’re dreaming of a career in wildlife or tourism, the Practical Game Management course gives you a fast, hands-on route into the industry. You’ll develop job-ready, practical skills across reserve management, eco-tourism, anti-poaching support, field guiding, game ranging, and lodge operations, all while living and learning in South Africa’s Big Five territory.

Game reserve and game farm management demand a broad skillset, from darting a rhino to folding a napkin – and everything in between – on this course you’ll cover 4X4 driving, anti-poaching and security, firearms handling, animal darting, wildlife and ecology management, and much, much more – all under the guidance of Bushwise’s expert trainers.

If you’re a school leaver, nature conservation student, or just someone ready to ditch the office job for a career outdoors, this course gives you broad exposure to every key pathway in the industry. Get your hands dirty, build a diverse skillset, and figure out where your future in the wildlife sector lies.

The best part? You don’t need any academic certificates to take this course – just a great attitude and a deep love of the wild.

Why study game operations with Bushwise?

The quickest way into a wildlife career

If you want to work with wildlife, this is the fastest path to get hired. You’ll qualify in just six months, then complete a 6-month practical work placement. If you don’t have a job offer in 6 months, we’ll refund 50% of your course fees*.

Get your hands dirty

If you like sitting at a desk, this probably isn’t for you. Every day will see you out in the bush, learning the hands-on practical skills you need to manage a working wildlife reserve, from setting camera traps to building fences and beyond. It’s physical. It’s challenging. It’s a whole lot of fun.

Develop a broad skillset

Want to work with wildlife, but not sure exactly which role would suit you best? This course allows you to explore all the different aspects of game reserve and game farm management, so you can find the career path that suits you best.

Have an adventure

At Bushwise, we work hard, and play harder. Meet like-minded people, sleep under the stars, live in the bush and make friends for life. Every day brings a new adventure. Are you up for the challenge?

The difference between a field guide, safari guide, and game ranger

In the wildlife, safari, tourism, and hospitality industries, these terms often get used interchangeably,  but they actually refer to different roles:

Field Guide / Safari Guide: These terms are interchangeable and refer to professionals who lead guests on game drives and walking safaris, interpreting the environment, wildlife behaviour, and conservation stories for visitors. Their focus is on guest experience, safety, and education. In South Africa, the official qualification for this role is the CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide (NQF2), which you’ll work towards on this course.

Game Ranger / Reserve Manager: This is more of a behind-the-scenes role. Game rangers manage the land and wildlife on a reserve, handling tasks like habitat management, road and fence maintenance, anti-poaching support, game monitoring, and conservation operations. They don’t usually guide tourists but play a crucial role in keeping the reserve healthy and operational.

Wildlife Tourism Professional: This is a broader term covering both guiding and reserve management, as well as hospitality roles like lodge management and guest operations.

The Practical Game Management Course is designed to give you exposure across all these areas, so you can find the career path that suits you best, whether that’s guiding guests on a safari, game reserve management, or lodge operations.

Course overview

Get ready for one of the most practical, intensive, and adventure-filled wildlife career training programmes in South Africa. The Practical Game Management Course (6–12 months) prepares you for real jobs in reserve management, eco-tourism, anti-poaching, and conservation operations.

You’ll take part in everything from wildlife monitoring and game counts to controlled burns, road and fence maintenance, K9 anti-poaching demonstrations, and basic lodge operations. Learn how to assist with mass game capture, work alongside wildlife vets during chemical immobilisations, and develop your skills in habitat management and ecological monitoring.

For students on the 12-month option, the second half of the course is a 6-month guaranteed work placement, where you’ll apply your skills in a professional reserve or tourism property. This gives you valuable on-the-ground experience and a foot in the door for future job opportunities.
