Surrounded by Lions……LITERALLY!

Surrounded by Lions……LITERALLY!

It’s the last week of our second semester and what a journey it’s been so far!

I’ve always dreamed of learning about the bush, so these past few months have pretty much been a dream come true – I am sure I am speaking on behalf of all the other students’ aswell. We have had experiences that we never imagined we would.

Tuesday night for example – we went on our second sleep out since the course started and were surrounded by a pride of lions, including a mating pair for THE WHOLE NIGHT!!!  It’s amazing to see how different and how much more curious lions are at night compared to during the day. Usually they would move off, but they stuck with us from about 6pm till about 6am the following morning. They weren’t even the slightest bit worried that we were on a Sleepout just a few meters away.

Two female lions were even so inquisitive that they decided to rip off the shade netting we had set up around our “toilet” area and ran off with it.  The sound of a lion roaring 10 – 20 meters away is amazing, but the sound of 8 individual lions all roaring together all around you is really something special.

What makes all of this funny and even more memorable is that before sleep out, without knowing what our night would be like, all of us, including our trainers decided to either draw on or shave some kind of moustache, just for the fun of it. So there we all were, sitting on the game viewer (trainers decided that the lions got a little bit too close for comfort, so called all the students to get to the vehicle) watching 8 lions walk by with our moustaches and excited faces.

This was definitely one of the best experiences I have ever had and something I will never forget and cherish forever. We are all still amazed at how lucky we were and how this is a once in a lifetime experience!

On the theory side of things, main focus this week has been on astronomy, rifle theory and biomes. My favourite is definitely astronomy, but can’t wait for us to start the practical rifle handling and shooting.

I am excited to see what the next few months will hold, but for now it is time to enjoy a well-deserved off week.

Life is good and my heart is happy. Till next Semester….
